The Whole Blood Brigade is an initiative by the Northern Virginia EMS Council to help establish a stable, easily replenished blood product that can be used by Emergency Medical Services in the Northern Virginia Region.

The program is based on research done by the U.S. Army and the Mayo Clinic. The studies found that type O+ (positive) donations from men with lower levels of certain types of antibodies can be used for whole blood transfusions in patients of any blood type just like O- (negative) donors.

The program represents a collaboration involving:

  • Inova Blood Donor Services
  • The Northern Virginia EMS Council
  • All Fire Departments and EMS agencies in Northern Virginia
  • Six Trauma Centers utilized by the Northern Virginia Region
    • George Washington Hospital Center, Level 1
    • Inova Fairfax Hospital, Level 1
    • Reston Hospital Center, Level 2
    • Virginia Hospital Center, Level 2
    • Inova Loudoun Hospital, Level 3
